Remote Safaris in the Kafue National Park
The Kafue National Park is similar in size to Wales, and is the largest park in Zambia.
The expanses of the Kafue are riddled with rivers that support a variety of different environments. In the heart of the park is the Kafue River a wide, deep, slow moving home to numerous hippo and crocodile. Tall, shady hardwoods overhang its banks, whilst occasional islands are the favourite places for elephant and buffalo.
Sustained by the rivers are surrounding riverine woodlands and occasional grassy pans, or dambos. This diversity of habitat is perfect for rich game viewing whilst on safari in this remote corner of Zambia. This is a vast and unspoilt wilderness area, with magnificent desert scenery, unusual geological formations, a variety of archaeological sites and a diverse selection of desert fauna & flora. This is also an area to spot the rare black rhino and the desert adapted elephant.

Safari activities available at Mowani include guided nature drives in search of the elusive yet hardy desert elephant, hiking through magnificent scenery, an excursion to explore the historical site of Twyfelfontein home of the rare Bushmen engravings and paintings. This wonderful archeological site offers more than 2,500 engravings as well as various paintings, and is probably the finest example of rock engravings in Southern Africa.
Include rarer antelope like roan, sable, eland and oribi. Lion, leopard and cheetah thrive in the Kafue, as do growing numbers of Africa's rarest large predators - wild dogs.
One of Kafue's main tributaries, the Lufupa River, enters the park at the Busanga Swamp area. During the wet season, the river floods out over the Busanga Plains, and when the waters recede again in May, they reveal a lush green swathe of vegetation.
The Kafue is a magical lush wilderness: flat grassland plains dotted with'islands of date palms, sausage trees and fig trees. On the plains of Kafue there are large numbers of red lechwe and puku, as well as buffalo, zebra and wildebeest, followed by occasional cheetah.
